  Faulking Opinions  -  Aug 4, 2010  -  Printable Version
- Blacks and Gays in the News
   by Mark Faulk

(Author’s note: I’m going to temporarily hijack this column to post some short observations on current headlines while I contemplate the downfall of America. Enjoy!)

I’ll begin with a couple of topics that had the Far Right cringing in their barcalounger.

A U.S. District Court today ruled that California’s Proposition 8, banning gay marriage, is unconstitutional. Judge Vaughn Walker said, “The evidence shows that, by every available metric, opposite-sex couples are not better than their same-sex counterparts; instead, as partners, parents and citizens, opposite-sex couples and same-sex couples are equal. Proposition 8 violates the equal protection clause because it does not treat them equally.”

He dismissed Prop 8 advocate attorneys’ argument that claimed it was legitimate concerns about marriage, religion, and tradition motivated California voters to pass the gay marriage ban. “That the majority of California voters supported Proposition 8 is irrelevant,” Judge Walker said. “Fundamental rights may not be submitted to a vote; they depend on the outcome of no elections.”

For traditional marriage zealots, it was, as ex-President Bush would say, “the double whammy”. Last month, a federal judge in Boston ruled that the federal Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional as well, saying that it violated the rights of gays under the equal protection clause.

Conservative organizations and religious zealots expect an epidemic of unnatural acts, such as the photograph below:

A cat shacks up with a dog in celebration of a U.S. District Judge’s ruling that overturned California’s ban on gay marriages.

And while gays were busy corrupting white straight America in California, FOX News was proving once and for all that all blacks actually do look alike, when news commentator Greta Van Susteren (pictured below) was forced to apologize for mixing up pictures of California Representative Maxine Waters, and Shirley Sherrod, another black woman who has been recently in the news.

Susteren immediately apologized on her blog, saying, "OOPS...we so screwed up on this one and we are sick about it..." In her defense, not only were both people black, they were both women as well, making it even more difficult to tell them apart.
