The following is a Letter to the Editor that I sent off to the Reno Gazzette Journal this morning.
I would like to respond to Don Maxwell's question (RGJ letters to the editor, Oct 9) asking which party the terrorists would support in the upcoming election.
If I understand George W Bush's reasoning correctly, the terrorists hate us because of our freedom. They hate freedom. He's told us that a hundred times. At first I didn't belive it, but I do now because he's our President and he's repeated it often, so it must be true.
Our freedoms are derived from the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The terrorists hate that. Therefore, I believe that the terrorists would support those that would deny us our Constitutional freedoms.
Witnessing the erosion of our Constitutional freedoms, such as laws against illegal search and seizure, warrantless wiretapping, suspending habeas corpus, inflicting cruel and unusual punishment, and adding "signing statements" that give the president the authority to ignore the laws approved by congress (thereby disregarding the Constitutional separation of powers), must bring great joy to the terrorists.
So, since the terrorists hate freedom, and the republicans in control of Congress and the White House are working to so hard abolish that freedom, the terrorists would most likely vote republican. Since it is my patriotic duty to vote against the terrorists, I find that I am also compelled to vote against the republicans who appease them.
