The Day the Music Died By: Down The Middle Nov. 3, 2004 Well, it looks like I got my ass whipped again. Being a child of the sixties, you’d think I’d be used to it by now {and it does seem like I’ve been gettin’ whipped my whole life}. I guess that’s just the way it is with us “little” people. But instead of crying about it {I already did that, thinking of my daughter possibly being conscripted to die for the Empire}, I’m going to raise one last “rebel yell”, for some of the people that have fought along side me...and yes, some of the people I consider to be heroes. Maybe, I should start by giving praise to Jefferson, Lincoln and the Kennedys. I could talk about John Kerry and John Edwards. I could even carry on about Michael Moore. I certainly should mention Kristen Brietweiser {I think you’re the greatest, girl!} and the other 9/11 widows who fought for justice...but today, I just want to say thank you to all the “little people” who “stood up”. One of those people is “To the Left”. I’ve known this guy all of my adult life and, if the term “good ole boy” fits anybody, it fits him! I will never forget my first “trip” with him, in his 442 with “To Our Children’s Children’s Children” on the stereo, blowing us smooth away. Our friendship has survived for these many years, burying many friends along the way and will continue until the day when one of us has to plant the other. To him, I say, “Thank you for your work on our column during this trying time and thank you for being a friend...and, oh yeah...Up the Revolution!” I also want to mention another guy who’s done some remarkable things with a little computer and a great imagination {not to mention energy, unbecoming to anyone over the age of nineteen}, my Editor in Chief, Mark Faulk. I hate giving compliments to Mark, not because he’s undeserving but because he has that insatiable “artist ego”. I guess that’s because he actually is one...an artist, that is. I know this because I was an artist, too. In fact, I guess you could say, I was Mark’s mentor when it came to painting surrealism. {You probably didn’t know, he used to paint and also work in clay}. But he followed another gift, the gift of words he inherited from his father and my dear friend, Bill Faulk...and, having been very close to Bill, I think I know how he would have felt about his son taking on the world, with only mere words for his arsenal. He would have looked over at me and simply smiled. No, Mark, I’m not going to tell you you’re my hero. {I haven’t painted a damn thing in three years but I’ve still got my own ego to protect!} However, I am going to thank you for not only trying to save the world, but for giving me the call to arms to stand beside you, to write beside you...and to let this artist express himself, once again.
