Down The Middle - Sep 26, 2004 - Printable Version - John Wayne Died at the Alamo by Down The Middle After all these years and all we have seen in our generation, I'm amazed to find that there are still so many people out there who are willing to believe ANYTHING that doesn't upset "the good life" they enjoy in the U.S. of A. These poor delusional souls, having little electricity left zooming around their gray matter {if there was any to begin with} tend to wrap themselves in the flag of patriotism rather than spend any effort and thought to seek out the truth...a truth they REALLY don't want to know. They will follow the leader anywhere, at least until someone actually shoots at their ass, and then they'll scatter like quail. Considering the amount of ridiculous statements coming from the right these days, I'm beginning to realize there must be a rather large voting block of morons in this country. Not too many months back, I remember hearing a Republican Congressman say, "George Bush could put his war record up against anyone's war record." (Silly me! I thought you actually had to have a war record before you could put it up against anyone else's.) Another oldie but a goodie is, "They're attacking us because they hate our freedom. (...Whaaat?) Then, there was Cheney telling an interviewer, "I don't know why anyone would connect me with Halliburton". (He obviously thinks we're all idiots.) These statements could only be fabricated for the consumption of those voters with a "room temperature" IQ (or less!). It was the swift boat B.S. that really got me, though. I could not believe that Americans were turning from a man who did his duty by serving in a war he didn't believe in, in favor of a man who shirked his duty, but was now sending young men to their death in "his war", and then strutting around like he was doing all the fighting. (Hell, I know a couple of chicks that could whip his ass.) The "religious right" is another group I'm having a hard time following. They truly believe this is a "holy war" (as if any war can be considered holy), and they claim that Islam is spreading it's religion by the sword, with the intent to dominate the entire world. Knowing some of the history, I can't argue with that (but wake me when they cross the river). It seems to me we're the ones that have been encroaching on their holy lands in recent years...but oh, never mind that, we're going to do the right thing anyway and blow those little "wogs" away. I have a hard time understanding how they adamantly refuse to vote for a party that allows abortion but seem to have no problem killing people, once they're out of the womb. Then, there are those we politely call the "far right". They really don't care much what the truth is because, if they agree with the political outcome, they "feel" no injustice was ever committed. I think their philosophy is, "when the others are dead, they'll be more for us." (Don't ever get stuck on a deserted island with one of these guys.) All the President had to do was wave a little tax break in front of these folks and they jumped in with both feet. I've yet to hear any of them explain how we are going to resolve the mounting deficit, but one thing I do know, it won't be with any of the oil we're going capture. That's reserved for the Houston boys. They've already proved that, by voting for the U.S. taxpayer to pick up the tab on Iraq. (Kerry voted against it.) Not long ago, I was eating out at a local restaurant when the proprietor came over to the table and lamented his yellow dog Democrat daddy would be rolling over in his grave, if he knew his son was going to vote Republican. He gave his reason as the ECONOMY. I didn't verbally question his statement but the expression on my face must have said what I was thinking as he furthered explained to me, he had interest in oil. Still, I didn't speak, but my immediate thought was, "I hope we don't have to invade another country every year or two to keep his monthly checks looking good." A woman told me, just tonight, that her brother, who I have known for many years to be a fine person, recently told her he was voting for Bush because "the economy was getting better and Bush would keep it going with the wars". My Lord, what is happening to us, that we have become willing to sacrifice our children for money? At the "way over yonder" extreme right, are the "neo-cons" that are now in control of the Administration and are deciding the fate of our country...and the fate of the world, for that matter. These are the people who can look on the "positive" side of thermonuclear war. (Nucular, as W. would say.) Their foreign policy view is basically to "kick their ass and take the gas". Unfortunately, this will take billions of our tax dollars and will cost thousands of young Americans their lives..."but what the hell, Halliburton will do great!" Now, let me explain, I'm no left wing, commie pinko. Really! There are actually a few issues I agree on, with the "right" but these guys even freak out Pat Buchanan. They failed to capture or kill bin Laden but they did manage to attack a country that had absolutely nothing...I repeat, NOTHING to do with 9/11. (Not to mention, they didn't even think to have someone plant the WMDs). Yet, the majority of the people still seem willing to swallow any B.S. these guys feed them. I truly, truly hate coming to the obvious conclusion that a good part of my countrymen do not share the moral values that others of us hold dear. With the blind faith of the religious and the wantonness of the greedy, our leaders have established an army of loyal supporters, and they are marching forward with their sinister plans. Oh, yea. I almost forgot the morons...but then, what do you say to someone who thinks John Wayne died at the Alamo?
