  Commentary Too  -  July 26, 2007  -  Printable Version
- laryngitis
   by Lauren Zuniga

there is a truth i am refusing to tell
there is a truth i am refusing to tell...

my throat is swollen and scabbed
clenched like virgin walls
the words only come
out like whispers
they tunnel through my esophagus
like soldiers elbowing through
to light but when they find my
tongue, my straight jacket lips
they slip and disappear
like they never
had a soul to start with.

truth is
i see the pain tucked in
deep wrinkles when
she asks me for money
tells me a story about her kids
and the thirteen dollars
she needs to get back home
gas can in hand, gunshot wound
freshly stitched and I start to say no
because I'm tired of this
being the
white lady that always gets asked for money
but the truth is
i am always the white lady
i get to be the white lady.

the truth is
my brother is carrying
two tons of armor
in the blistering Iraqi sun
cradling his gun like
the only power he will ever hold in his hands
He is pounding the soft
Mesopotamian sand
hoping it will bury the image
of that brown princess
in her shrapnel necklace
while
I attend peace rallies
and call for blame to the men
who got us in this mess
(even though our leaders can't do anything
we are not willing to do our selves
this is a reflection of the violence we hold within)
when he calls home we argue
about the irony of defense
and in the end
I'm always a damn hippy.
But I get to be the hippy.
I am so lucky to be the hippy.

the truth is...
the truth is
that I am blessed beyond beliefs
beyond ideas, or personalities
each day I watch the clouds
turn into hippos and bumble bees
I have as much love in my life as privilege
but as many complaints as I do dreams
so today my voice quit working
because sometimes you have
to shut up
to get relief...
sometimes you have to be
still long enough to notice things

truth is
that when I take a moment to notice
each one of us is a luminous
bundle of color drops
a collectively contaminated
public pool of thought
swimming with brightly colored rings
and slippery laminated
stories to sing
and I want to dive through them all
I want to be the life guard that saves
you when you fall and start to sink
when you think your going in too deep
the one that reminds you
that when you hit the concrete
you'll no longer be asleep
but I'm no guru
I'm no sage
i am a fish hook seller
dust blown up into a shape
I am just a string of pretty words
flashing lights on a stage
I'm just the sayer
the one that hands you a pretty ball
of wisdom wrapped in three minutes
on your mp3 player
but if you listen
if you really listen
you realize it was your voice
that disappeared
it is your voice that
you can finally hear
you are the savior
the water and the
concrete that caught you when you fell
you are the truth
you are the truth
we are the truth
we no longer refuse to tell
