(Editor's note: Words from a new addition to The Faulking Truth....Lauren Zuniga. This is much more than just poetry, it's truth with a rhythm. Much more to come.) I used to love the color of snow (it’s prettiest when brown branches hold back the heavy sky) but now I don’t relate to its purity. Once a soft blanket of fleeting fleece, now is just blinding and cold. I live in a town that shuts down at the slightest slippery road which gives me time to contemplate its absurdity. We don’t make sense any more. Our snow angels have been trampled and the men have melted into lumps of forgotten fun soon it will be time to clean up the mess. We’ve become a chalk drawing more illusive than television pixels, destined to be washed into the piles of gray sludge that line the street. I am questioning myself now. Someone once noticed I segregate my M&Ms. I’ve decided red is the best and brown the worst. They must be eaten separately. Yes, I have indeed cried at the thought of a world with labeled drinking fountains, signs above diner doors, Whites Only, I have screamed at my own ancestors How could you? How could you? I brush my daughter’s curly, coffee hair with joy and sometimes I think I am evolved. But just because you married a black man doesn’t mean you’re not racist, I, too, need reminding. Just because we didn’t own slaves doesn’t mean that entitlement is not in our blood. I used to love the color of snow now it’s just blinding and cold.
