Commentary Too - Oct 31, 2006 - Printable Version - When the Shiite Hits the Fan by Down the Middle With the elections only days away, it appears that conservatives will be crossing the line in record numbers, to threaten an undoing of the Republican stranglehold on Congress. Many believe this shift of power will finally bring a timely end to the war in Iraq…but these naïve liberals may soon realize that not only, will we stay in Iraq for years to come…but that the war is on the verge of encompassing the entire Gulf region. At this moment, virtually all of the western powers have strong elements of their navies maneuvering on station or involved in joint exercises, in and around the Persian Gulf. With the exercises ranging from interdiction maneuvers of stopping and boarding ships suspected of transporting weapons of mass destruction {in response to a recently reported Al Qaeda threat against Persian Gulf oil supplies} to anti-submarine warfare tactics being practiced by the Indian Navy in concert with U. S. warships, it appears that overwhelming forces are now in position to take an active part in Karl Rove’s purported “October surprise”, even if a few days late. Rumor now has it that there will be an Israeli “false flag” submarine attack upon a British warship in the Gulf, immediately igniting hostilities against Iran, who is set to “take the fall” for the attack, being the only Islamic nation in the region known to possess a submarine fleet. Although this scenario is only one of many possibilities, which could ignite hostilities with Iran, there are many indications that this war may begin in a matter of days. Watch for something to happen in or around Basra, very soon. My reasoning to believe that war with Iran is now, imminent, whether it be propagated by an attack on a British warship, an attack on the Basra oil terminal or a confrontation with suspected smugglers of WMDs is not found in rumor or maneuvers…but in the simple assessment of inventory hardware. The fact that two amphibious assault groups {Marines} are in theater with the Eisenhower and Enterprise Battle Groups and accompanied by two mine sweepers, two mine destroyers, a U.S. Coast Guard ship, at least one docking ship and a rumored hospital ship lurking in the shadows can only mean that we now, have all our necessary components “on the board”. I do not believe this to be a “wasted trip”. Even without an “incident” to widen the war across the Persian Gulf, most Democratic leaders continue to fully support the War On Terror and are not in favor of creating any timetable for withdrawal, from Iraq. In fact, Hillary Clinton, who is introducing a bill to increase the army’s ranks by 100,000 soldiers is now receiving campaign support from pro-war media tycoon, Rupert Murdoch, owner of the New York Post, the London Times and Fox News {as well as being the bankroller of William Kristol’s Weekly Standard}. By anyone’s guess, given “anyone” is somewhat rational and moderately objective…and trusting in a reasonably honest accounting from our electronic voting machines, the Democrats should recapture the House and also have an outside chance at the Senate. Unfortunately, Democratic control of Congress cannot reverse the tragedy that has already become Iraq…and it cannot prevent another war that will have already begun.
