- You're Doing it All Wrong
by Down the Middle Only a few weeks until the Congressional election and it's beginning to appear that the Republicans have somehow missed shooting themselves in the foot, only to find that they've actually blown their own head off. Sorry for the graphic display, but it was either that or the imagery that first came into your mind when reading the title, and I think Mr. Foley has supplied us with enough of those visuals for a day or two.
But while the networks are giving up the sacrificial Republican Congressman, and putting Jimmy Carter smiles on every Democrat's face, in doing so, we must remember that all the “power brokers” will quickly deal with this current crisis (in terms, most advantageous to themselves), dispose of it and get back to “business as usual.”
Whether it be the Congressional sex scandal, the war in the Middle East or the bankruptcy of our nation, we can't keep meeting this way, or should I say, we can't ONLY keep meeting this way. Internet bloggers have done an amazing job of telling the “other half of the story,” but it's not enough.
Yes, we've made a huge difference and are finally getting the well-deserved notice that our country deserves. Notice that I didn't say, “that we deserved,” because it's not about us, as individual writers and webmasters. It's not about our fame and our fortune. It's about saving our country, indeed the world and its people. The only way to do that is to take the message beyond our computers. Case in point, the Congressional sex scandal.
Most anyone within listening distance to a radio or TV will soon know most everything about Mr. Foley's e-mails, at least, everything deemed admissible by “the Controllers,” and the free press of the bloggers will surely tell the rest, but it is only the “news surfers” of the internet that will be exposed to the whole story, which has gone on for years, without proper investigation and resolution.
Whether it is this most recent scandal or any other misdeeds that need correcting, the public is still “blind in one eye,” when it comes to the well-hidden truths. It is not enough that we write the stories, and it is not enough that we read the stories. If we are to inform the “unconnected” masses, we may just have to become the paperboy, too.
I, myself, print out an occasional story to show my father, a man well beyond the age of computers, and I do the same for another friend, who has two sons serving in Iraq. Obviously, he is very concerned about what's going on there, but he simply can't afford a computer and another monthly utility bill. If I fail in this service, these people will be at the mercy of network news, which could be worse than no news at all.
The fate of this country can no longer afford to be confined to the Internet and a few rare publications. I think the high price of printer ink and a few minutes of my time is well worth the protection of our children and their country.
