- Labor, Community, and Civil Rights Group Announces Rally in Baton Rouge
   by NOAH Coalition

Baton Rouge, LA—Louisiana-based labor, community and civil rights organizations including the LA AFL-CIO, ACORN, SEIU Locals 21LA and 100, and the Baton Rouge NAACP announced the formation of a new coalition called New Opportunity for Action and Hope (NOAH) at a press conference held at the Old State Capitol building. Joining them were several elected officials from New Orleans and Baton Rouge as well as several evacuees displaced from their communities by Hurricane Katrina.

“We have witnessed the worst natural disaster to ever hit our nation and the worst response to a disaster ever by our federal government,” said BR NAACP President Kwame Assante. “But we must focus on the present and come together to make sure that the hard-working people of Louisiana have homes and jobs to come back to.”

NOAH is working to ensure that as LA rebuilds, the poverty that preceded Katrina is not recreated. The coalition is fighting for priority job placement and training for LA residents, living wages for workers and immediate and long-term affordable housing for displaced working families.

AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Louis Reine called for greater protections for working families, citing President Bush’s recent repeal of the Davis-Bacon law, a law which sets a minimum standard for workers wages. “Now is the time to help working families rebuild their communities and their lives,” said Reine. “Lowering workers’ wages at a time of need victimizes Katrina survivors all over again.”

LA-ACORN spoke about the need for immediate housing for displaced Louisianans as well as a plan to transition to long term affordable housing. “Hundreds of thousands of New Orleans residents have been forced out of the city and we must work together to guarantee that they can return to their homes,” said ACORN leader Tanya Harris. “There must be a plan for transforming temporary housing into long term affordable housing in order to truly rebuild.”

NOAH also announced it will organize a rally in Baton Rouge on Oct. 29th. Maria Wickstrom, President of SEIU Local 21 LA noted, “The rally is an opportunity for the working people most impacted by the hurricane to make their voices heard— to demand good jobs that pay a living wage as well as immediate and affordable housing in their communities. We must stand together to make sure that we are heard and our state recovers stronger than before. We hope all those that share these values will join us in Baton Rouge on October 29th.”
