- Buy American! (While You Still Can)
   by Mark Faulk

Need a washing machine? Buy it from an American company....buy a Maytag! Better hurry, though, because it looks like Maytag is about to be bought out by China's Haier Group. Rumor has it that the new Maytag Repair Man could be played by Jet Li.

Forget about those commies, I'll just go with a Whirlpool or GE washer and dryer, because I'm all about supporting Americans! Americans and American companies. Products made right here in the good ol' USofA! Mmmm, sorry, Whirlpool and GE have moved over half of their production to foreign countries. The good news is: Whirlpool has tripled its workforce in the past decade. The bad news? They tripled it overseas. In America, they haven't added job one.

That okay, I'll just get in my American made Chrysler PT Cruiser (nope, owned by Germany), gas up at the Chevron station (Canadian-owned), stop by 7-Eleven for a Big Gulp (sorry, "7-Ereven" is owned by Japan), and drive around until I find an American washer and dryer (good luck with that one).

But that's not even the real issue. I mean, sure, exporting our jobs and companies overseas means that we'll all eventually be working for China or Japan. Hell, I even called AOL today (that would America Online), and got a customer rep speaking in broken English from Lord knows where, but when I asked her who won the '39 World Series, it was clear that she wasn't "one of us".

As I said, that's bad enough. But now, A Chinese company is bidding to buy out US oil company Unocal. China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), wants our oil, but has pledged to keep any oil produced in the USA in America. Doesn't matter. 70% of Unocal's oil and gas reserves are in Asia, and we won't see a drop of that oil or gas here once China controls it. And, Unocal also owns a major pipeline that is hooked up to American strategic oil reserves, and has Asia's largest storehouse of liquified natural gas. Turn THAT over to China? Surely not.

Luckily, our Administration, on a day that oil has just hit a record high (yet again), wouldn't even consider selling off our oil interests to a Communist country, especially one that intends to use those resources to strengthen their military forces. Would they?

CNOOC has already begun to jockey for position with the Bush Administration, and is being represented here by Public Strategies, an Austin, TX based public relations firm whose vice chairman, Mark McKinnon, led President Bush's media campaign in the 2004 election, and briefed Bush for the presidential debates. Nothing like inside connections to grease the wheels when it comes to "making things happen" in the White House. Throw financial advisors Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan into the mix, and CNOOC is covering all their bases.

And it wouldn't be the first time we've allowed foreign interests buy out our oil and gas companies. In the past ten years alone, foreign companies have bought all or part of Amoco, Arco, Texaco, Pennzoil, Chevron, Monsanto, and CITGO Petroleum.

China wants our oil bad, and they're willing to spend any amount of money to get their hands on it. And why not? After all, the money they're spending to "Buy America" is the same money that they've been taking from us year after year, as we rack up record trade deficits with China. In fact, the Unocal deal only represents 10% of the money that they took from us last year alone.

With money like that to burn, China could not only buy American, they might just end up buying America, lock, stock, and barrel. And that, fellow Americans (for now anyway), is the Faulking Truth.
