Commentary - Nov 18, 2004 - Printable Version - Inside Bush’s Brain: “Hellooooo, Karl!” by Linda C. Wilson Remember the good old days when it was polite to leave your religion and your politics at the door, and never bring up these two subjects with neighbors, co-workers, shopkeepers or your in-laws? I remember walking the halls in third grade with an “I LIKE IKE” button on my cardigan sweater. I found this treasure in a ditch, we walked to school in our good leather shoes, polished like mirrors, along the ditches and railroad tracks. Life was good. My family didn’t particularly like Ike, so the button magically disappeared that very afternoon. What I would give to have that treasure today, just to remind me of a kinder, gentler world, and a more flexible person with a sense of humor: me! I’m in a bad mood about Kerry losing, and I’m not playing well with others right now. If I read an opinion letter about how George Bush received his precious mandate, I am blue for hours and cannot concentrate on my work, or even formulate a comprehensive grocery list. I think about the coordinated effort by the far right Republicans to put anti-Gay amendments on the ballots in eleven states, thereby driving a wedge between reality and reason, between science and superstition. I fret about all the hours spent by thousands of people to get out the vote and vote against the “liberal agenda”. I don’t need to read a novel about fictional villains and heroes, I have the internet, the newspapers, and dozens of whistleblower best-sellers to keep me up-to-date on the latest horrors of politics and religion in these United States. It makes me sad and angry to know that so many people in America are concentrating their energies to deny equal rights to gay people. I sense a closet door opening up revealing darkness and shame within, and a pre-recorded voice saying, “Go back inside or else!” Who is speaking to the Religious Right base, who is “the voice” who sets the tone for the neoconservatives during this 2004 election cycle? The voice I hear is coming from the bowels of Bush’s “Architect of the Presidency”: Karl Rove. While I was brushing the dirt off my “Ike” button in Memphis, Karl Rove was being himself in a Texas school somewhere, just a little tyke, a self-described nerd who didn’t fit in and didn’t try to fit in. Karl Rove is undeniably the Oz to Bush’s Dorothy, he is the man behind the curtain, and President Bush brags about this. It’s like, “Well, I’m not so stupid, here’s my brain, Karl Rove!” Rove uses many savage tactics to achieve his political ends, none spared on this election, a couple failed but in the end, his dirty tricks paid off with a victory for his loyal friend, George W. Bush. The attacks were launched on multiple fronts, dividing the resources of any challengers, specifically the John Kerry campaign. This infernal pounding made it impossible for Senator Kerry to concentrate on anything except fielding the charges and dismantling the disinformation. John Kerry was forced to address all the issues raised by Rove and Company, he had to jump from subject to subject, run from fire to fire, just to keep up with each day’s headlines. With rich corporate media giants controlling the flow of information via newspapers, internet and cable TV news, it’s been a continuing saga of bad news about Kerry and Edwards and their liberal agenda. Karl Rove shamelessly manipulated the conservative Christian vote in the meanest possible fashion. He went a step farther then the old stand-by, “We are Christian Pro-life” and they are babykillers: This election, he went to “We are straight and our marriage is sanctioned by God,” and they are deviates. And, America, we let it happen. While we were fighting in the streets of New York at the GOP convention or mobilizing attorney’s to watch the butterflies in Dade County, some pretty nasty business may have occurred with the touchscreen voting machines and some boxes of absentee ballots may have been tossed out the back door in Jacksonville...again! Investigations and recounts are on-going today, and yes, where there is smoke, there usually is fire! Meanwhile, a big kid with a huge chip on his shoulder and lots of baggage from a sad childhood of rejection at home and at school, that big kid now being hailed as “the brain of the President”, Karl Rove helped swing millions of votes to President Bush using the hate factor; he played the homosexual card and it paid off for his party. It has been said that someday we will be very ashamed of our intolerance of gays and we will be sad that we denied rights to gays, just as we regretted years of ignorance and intolerance regarding civil rights for blacks. But for me, that someday is now. I’m ashamed now. I regret that along with the election results, some claim a victory based on Gays, Guns and God. How scary is that, people! After the first three months of Bush’s first term, I said, “How have we come so far (down) in such a short time!” Again, how far backwards will we have to go to appease the warped world view that is in the head of Bush’s brain, Karl Rove!
