In an effort to force President Bush to “stop acting up” Democrats has begun to use the “C Word”, and U.S. Senator Russ Feingold will ask Congress today to officially censure President Bush. After discussions as to what punishment Bush deserves for authorizing an illegal wiretapping program and later misleading Congress and the American public about its existence, Democrats decided not to pursue impeachment proceedings, and settled instead on administering a stern scolding to the President.
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold said that "The President must be held accountable for authorizing a program that clearly violates the law and then misleading the country about its existence and its legality. The President's actions, as well as his misleading statements to both Congress and the public about the program, demand a serious response. If Congress does not censure the President, we will be tacitly condoning his actions, and undermining both the separation of powers and the rule of law."
If Feingold is successful in censuring the president, Bush would be the first president to be censured since President Andrew Jackson was sent to bed without his dinner in 1834 for lying to Congress.
An anonymous Congressional aide said that among the options discussed in intense private meetings among key members of Congress were grounding the president for a month, taking away his I-pod, and forcing him to actually attend policy meetings with Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. Finally, it was decided that the best course of action would be a strong scolding, perhaps accompanied by a couple of sharp raps on the nose with a rolled up newspaper, and stern admonishings of “no no, bad President!”
Other Democrats wanted to rub the president’s face in the Constitution, and one Congressman is said to have even suggested that Bush be forced to quaff a quart of beer using a “beer bong’, but other Democrats decided that that would be counter-productive.
CNN reported on the controvery Sunday night, and then asked listeners to phone in and vote on whether President Bush should be censured for invading the privacy of Americans. Then, they asked for voters to "give us your name and location" after voting. Only in America.
