(Editor's note: This is a response I posted on a discussion on a MySpace group called "The Left", after listening to a few people debate why there don't seem to be any truly inspirational leaders in America today. The person who posed the original question went to a peace rally and was disappointed by the people who spoke there, I'll reprint his original post in part, and my response after the debate went on for awhile.) Where are the leaders of our movements? What happened to the charismatic leaders of the past? Men and women that could inspire people, whom had a real voice and could change minds and mobilize the masses? The Abbie Hoffmans, Malcolm X's, the Fred Hamptons? I recently went to a "World Can't Wait" rally. It sucked. It was a bunch of whiny college professors reading from the same pamphlet we were all handed on the way into the fedral plaza. Although I praise their intentions and dedication, and although we strive for the same cause, I was disappointed with the moot, wishywashy message they were putting out. WE ALL KNOW WHY WE'RE HERE, WE DON"T NEED TO BE REMINDED. The question is how to mobilize the people. They were preaching to the choir and they knew it. This is the same reason why the communist party failed to stir the imaginations of the vehemently anti-Bush youth. Instead of preaching ACTION, they would sit in a room and tell you why the Bush administration was bad. NO SHIT. Thats why we were there. We wanted to do something about it, but all we got was pamphlets. So...where are they? Have you seen them? I haven't. Faulking Truth: Damn.....nice sentiments here, but I think that you're missing the bigger issue. I've spent the past two years (along with a handful of really talented activst/writers) trying to get the message across that if we don't do something....and soon....our planet will reach the point of no return. We've had mixed results....tons of readers, real progress on some issues, very little on others. (here's our website, for those who haven't seen us already: http://www.faulkingtruth.com/ ) But having said that, I'm beginning to realize that the major difference between this generation and my generation....the so-called "Woodstock Generation" is that we were visible....we took to the streets to protest the Vietnam War, President Nixon, in support of Civil Rights, and our numbers were there in plain sight. I've been simply stunned and dismayed that the college campuses of today aren't filled with protesters, and that while the activists of Europe can mobilize their numbers to fill the streets and squares, we remain for the most part passive. Why? This is the reason right here....the internet. I just read an article about MySpace that said that they have 41 million subscribers.....90% of them between the ages of 14 and 30, and what the fuck are they doing? They're chatting online, and trying to hook up with whoever and do whatever....they're escaping reality. Here's the problem: the media will never show up and videotape 41 million people chatting with each other online, even if they're all debating about how to stop the war (by the way, for the most part, they're not). I'm going to say this in plain english: you have to get off of your couches, away from your computers, and hit the streets. Imagine if you could mobilize just one-tenth of the people on MySpace alone to gather in every city in America and protest the war.....that's over four million voices in unison gathered together in public, as opposed to 41 million people hiding alone in their fucking houses....chatting online. 4 million people....now that's a photo op that the media couldn't ignore. Don't get me wrong, the internet has its place. I feel blessed to have become part of the blogger revolution that has picked up where the media has failed....exposing lies, telling the truth that they won't tell, blahblahblah....but that has to be just the beginning. Use the internet to get the word out.....but then, turn off the damn computer and take to the streets. It really is that simple. (FYI: I posted this because I'm too lazy to write a real article today, and there's an OSU basketballl game on TV, which kind of proves my whole point, now doesn't it? What the hell, at least I'm honest about it. By the way, our MySpace site is www.myspace.com/faulkingtruth , come by and visit, and waste your time NOT doing anything to make the world a better place. See how this works?)
