Blogfest 2005 - Dec 4, 2005 - Printable Version - Confessions of a White Gentile by Mark Faulk Once again, we seem to have unwittingly stepped into a social/political landmine at The Faulking Truth. I penned a little piece called "And May all Your Christmases be White...." while I was in Washington DC last Thursday night, after being deeply moved by the events I witnessed on the perimeter of the White House. It seemed innocent enough, a heartfelt account of a group of Ethiopian protestors who were calling for President Bush to "make the call now" and join worldwide efforts to free a number of demonstrators who were arrested for peacefully protesting in Ethiopia, and are now facing a possible death penalty. I'll post a couple of the comments we have received in the "Letters to the Editor" column, along with my not-too-subtle responses, but first I'd like to relate a little story from my own childhood that might help you understand why I feel so strongly about this issue, and why I refuse to back down when it comes to speaking out for the rights of the oppressed, both in our own country and worldwide. Until the age of twelve, I grew up in a small....white....suburban community, where the widely accepted but never mentioned unofficial "sundowner law" was in effect in the mid to late sixties. What was the "sundowner law"? It was simple, if you were black, you had to be out of town before sundown....or else. Being only eleven years old at the time, I had no idea what "or else" really meant, and I still can't say for sure. All I know is that no one dared to test it. That is, until my family came along. In 1968, my parents decided to sponsor a foster child from Chicago for a year - an African American foster child. She was a year older than me, and completely misplaced in Middle America with an all-blond family in an all-white community. Looking back, I can only imagine how she must have felt. At around the same time, my father was asked by several black college students to found a chapter of the NAACP in our lily-white community. I was told at the time that he was the first white chapter president that the NAACP had ever had, but I can't confirm that. A number of black couples had been trying to rent houses or apartments in Edmond, Oklahoma (yes, the same Edmond, Oklahoma where former FEMA director Mike Brown is from), but had been turned down even when those houses were obviously available. Eventually, they proved that discriminatory practices existed there, and broke the "color line" in Edmond in the late sixties. Good for them. I remember the day my father and mother sat us all down and spoke to us about the possible dangers of standing up for civil rights at that time, in that tumultuous era. We talked about everything from personal threats to the possiblity of crosses being burned in our front yard, and how to deal with anything that might arise. It was one of the many "defining moments" in my life. "Turn around and walk away if someone says something to you," is how my father put it, but I knew in my heart that if he could put himself on the line for what he believed in, if he could stand up for the rights of others, that I would stand up as well. Fortunately, the people of Edmond must have been ready for change, because, at least in that little community, change came without any serious incidents, and thankfully so. And now, here we are almost forty years later, and prejudice still exists, and in some instances, seems to be even worse than it was then. I thought we would have learned something by now, and many of us have, but it's obvious that some of us haved learned absolutely nothing. Nothing about love for our fellow man, nothing about compassion, nothing about "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," nothing about "all men are created equal." Nothing but hate, hate driven by fear and ignorance. As for me, I'll continue to stand up for what is right, and speak out against racism, elitism, and prejudice. As long as I have a voice to call out with, I will follow in the footsteps of my father and mother before me, I will never just "turn around and walk away." And that is the Faulking Truth.
