The good news is -- and it's hard for some to see it now -- that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house -- he's lost his entire house -- there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch. (Laughter.)"
Please, somebody....anybody.....wake me up from this fucking madness. Tell me that our President didn't really get off of a plane in Mobile, Alabama, and make a joke about rebuilding a rich white bigot Senator's house on taxpayers' money......and that the White House didn't post it on their website and insert a laugh track along with it. Tell me that he really cares about us, and that he would never say anything so calloused and disrespectful while people were dying of dehydration at exactly the same moment that his audience was chuckling aloud at his sick twisted humor. Reassure me that he didn't really crack a joke about how great New Orleans was because he used to go there and "enjoy myself - occasionally too much." Bodies are floating through the streets of the city, and he's reminiscing about his drunken college days? Say it isn't so.
"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says 'we're going to move to Houston.' What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."
Wake me up from this nightmare. Shake me gently, and explain in a soft comforting voice that Barbara Bush didn't really suggest that for thousands of victims of Hurricane Katrina, that losing everything that they owned, watching people die all around them, and seeing their friends and family slowly starve to death for five days was the best thing that ever happened to them.
Every day, I read more and more insanity....and follow the links in disbelief, thinking....."this can't be true", or "someone had to have made this up." We've detailed the atrocities day after day, each day hoping that our President will.....at long last.....do the right thing, or at least say the right thing. I keep wanting to pinch myself......hoping to hear someone say......
"Dorothy, wake up, honey.....there, there, lie quiet now. You just had a bad dream."
But instead, I'm trapped in this surreal Land of Oz for eternity, with a President without a brain, a Vice-President with no heart, a Congress with no nerve, and sadly.....a million citizens without homes.
This is reality, folks.....harsh, cold reality. All of the things that we've been warning America about for the past few years have come to pass.....tenfold. I don't even want to say "I told you so", because it pains me to watch the despair that this administration has unleashed on our nation. Take a good hard look at the family that is our version of the Royal Family, and tell me....did we get what we deserve?
Did we get what we deserve for re-electing a President who lied to take us to war, and who has continued to lie to keep us there, who has spent money like a drunken frat boy with his daddy's Platinum Master Card, who has handed out cash to all of his rich friends like it was Halloween candy? Did we get what we deserve for sitting back and watching him and his Big Business cronies rape our country every damn day for the past five years, and for believing the scripted lies of Corporate Media who shilled for him until they realized that they, too had been treated like cheap whores?
WE have brains.....WE have hearts.....do we finally, at long last, have the nerve to say "enough is enough!"
I'm sorry....it's late, and I've been staying up half the night for the past week, hoping to say something....anything....that might make things right. Maybe it's time I just went to bed and got a good night's sleep, and maybe, just maybe, tomorrow I'll wake up to a better world....one where things "work out very well" for every citizen, regardless of race, color, or wealth....and where everyone has a "fantastic house," a house built "out of the rubble" of corruption, incompetency, and greed on a foundation of opportunity, honesty, and integrity.
And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch (Laughter.)
