Blogfest 2005 - Aug 23, 2005 - Printable Version - Pat Robertson's Case for the Assassination of President Bush.....I mean, Hugo Chavez by Mark Faulk (Editor's disclaimer #1: I want to make it perfectly clear that I am NOT advocating the assassination of President Bush, or even Karl Rove, for that matter. This article is satire, meaning that it's a joke. Get it?) Yesterday, "Reverend" Pat Robertson called for the US to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, saying that Chavez poses a "terrific danger" to the United States, and that he represents a threat to our national security. Hmmmm......President Bush poses a terrific danger to the United States, AND he represents a threat to our national security. I wonder.....(Editor's disclaimer #2: Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT assassinate President Bush.) Just for fun, let's take a look at Chavez's record in Venezuela as it compares to our President's record. Chavez was first elected as President of Venezuela in 1998 on a platform of "sharing the nation’s oil wealth with the poorest." He has used much of the profits from the wealthy oil companies to initiate social reforms and programs for the poor. Bush gave a $6 billion dollar tax break to the oil companies in the US, and gas prices have doubled during his presidency, allowing oil companies to pocket record profits year after year. During his reign, the already filthy rich have gotten even filthier. (Disclaimer #3: Assassination is NOT an option.....we are, after all, a democracy, just ask Pat Robertson....sorry, bad example.) Under Chavez, "the poor now have their own family doctors on call 24-hours a day—doctors who even make house calls. This heath care, including medicines, are all free." Under Bush, our poor and elderly have faced soaring medical costs, while pharmaceutical companies have joined in the party with oil companies to squeeze record profits out of Americans' pockets. And doctors on call 24-hours a day, or who make house calls? Not unless your address happens to be "Bush Ranch, Crawford, TX." (Disclaimer #4: Let me make this perfectly clear....this article is satire, so on matter what Pat Robertson's logic might lead you to conclude, our country does NOT assassinate heads of state, no matter how corrupt they might be.) Chavez won his last election (in 2004) by a landslide, by a 58-42 percent margin. The Mainstream Media in this country has spent much effort vilifying Chavez, accusing him of (according to www.commondreams.org) "using the social programs that have so improved the lives of the poor as a way to gain voters. In this, the opposition is right: providing people with free health care, education, small business loans and job training is certainly a good way to win the hearts and minds of the people." Bush was re-elected in a disputed (many would use the term "rigged") election, marred by electronic voting discrepancies that showed totals that bore little resemblance to exit poll totals. He won by catering to the same oil and pharmaceutical companies and other ultra-rich special interest groups that he would later give massive giveaways to in his budget. He even went so far as to comment to an $800 a plate diamond-studded gathering of supporters, "This is an impressive crowd - the haves and the have-mores. Some people call you the elites; I call you my base." (Disclaimer #5: Okay, that one really pisses me off too, but still.....this is a democracy, and every American has the right to be a heartless asshole without the fear of being assassinated. I'm not kidding.) I could go on, but I think you get the point, and in case you didn't here it is: Assassinating the head of a country isn't the way to solve anything, no matter how evil you think that person is. Even if Pat Robertson says it's okay, it's not. He is another one of the aforementioned assholes who has the right to pretty much say any stupid thing he wants.....without fear of being assassinated. One other thing: Newspaper reports cited Chavez's "opposition to US policies" in their articles about Robertson's plan to assassinate the Venezuelan President. Hey, wait a minute....I oppose US policies, does that mean that I should be....um, never mind. (Editor's disclaimer #6: Whatever you do, DO NOT assassinate me....no, seriously, don't even think about it.) Now, on the other hand, if anyone wants to talk about impeaching our President.....then count me in. I'll pull the trigger on that democratic process any time, and THAT'S the Faulking Truth.
