- A 'Tribute' to Steve Martin
by Mark Faulk When I first got the idea for the Faulking Truth, I thought it would be in the vein of Steve Martin, whom I admire very much, by the way. It seemed to me I could hone my skills in the shadow of the Great One, and when he passed away, I would appear, as if by magic, witticisms in hand, ready and willing to fill the emptiness of a grieving nation. It wasn’t until much later that I found out that he’s not nearly as old as he looks, and luck be damned, he might be the only Hollywood celebrity not teetering on the brink of an overdose of some type. Why do bad things always happen to me?
Don’t get me wrong, I consider him a national treasure, and have always, when discussing the genius of the various Saturday Night Live alumni, included Mr. Martin in my top twenty. And on more than one occasion, I’ve commented that I hoped he lived to be a hundred. Of course, at the time, I thought he was already well into his eighties (it’s the white hair), and I had carefully counted ahead in my datebook to the day he would “pass the baton” to me, his loyal disciple. Now the best I can hope for is an early retirement, and even then, the public is likely to ignore all pretenders to the throne in the hope that he will pull a Garth Brooks and tearfully announce his last work of comedy, only to reappear the very next week, rested, tanned, and refreshed, and hyping his latest book and/or movie project. And in the meantime, I grow older, more embittered and desperate, plotting my revenge on the selfish over-the-hill icon who has stolen away my one shot at glory. Your day will come, Mr. Steve “I’m better than everyone else” Martin. Watch your back, and that’s.....

P.S. maybe I’ll write this more in the style of Hunter S. Thompson. I’m not sure how old he is either, but look at the guy, he’s been living on the edge for years. Plus, there’s a guy with some serious drug mileage on him. He could go any minute. And when he does, I’ll be waiting.....
