I Think We're all Bozos on this Bus

Nov. 5, 2005

Okay, it's official....everyone here has become so disenchanted and disgusted with the current state of affairs that they've decided to "turn on, tune in, and drop out". It's beginning to look like a mass exodus back to 1968, if the posts in our Guestbook are any indication. I've had at least two offers to "hold hands and sing John Lennon songs" in the "circle of love". And, honestly, it's starting to sound pretty damn appealing. Lord knows that reality is beginning to look harsh indeed for the next four years.

One pointless observation: Has anyone else noticed that even though Bush and his cronies are all homophobic, they love to toss around the word "Mandate"? It's makes you wonder, doesn't it? (Okay, maybe it's only me.)

Finally (before I go pretend to do some real work), Lily added this tantalizing offer to her post: "You can braid my hair and we'll all quote Timothy Leary". I'm not exactly sure why, but somehow, that sounds really hot. Unfortunately, if Russell "Every word of it is true, except for the parts I made up" Tharp is to be believed, then Lily's not even old enough to have been CONCEIVED in the back of a Microbus in 1968, much less smoked a bong in one. Oh, who cares? You're all invited....unlike our current Administration, we don't discriminate based on age, race, religion (or the lack thereof), sexual preference, or even political party affiliation.

Go to our cybermicrobus and a take a couple of hits off of the metaphorical bong that's being passed around: http://www.faulkingtruth.com/GuestBook/

And in that spirit, here are a few of my favorite Timothy Leary quotes:

"Civilization is unbearable, but it is less unbearable at the top."

"We are dealing with the best-educated generation in history. But they've got a brain dressed up with nowhere to go."

"In the information age, you don't teach philosophy as they did after feudalism. You perform it. If Aristotle were alive today he'd have a talk show."

"There are three side effects of acid: enhanced long-term memory, decreased short-term memory, and I forget the third."

"Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition."

"I've left specific instructions that I do not want to be brought back during a Republican administration."

In case you had any doubts, here's Bush telling America what he really thinks of us:

And here's what we really think of him:

Dude, Where's My Bong?

Nov. 3, 2004
It's beginning to look like Bush will carry the election, but as is rapidly becoming the new tradition in our Presidential elections, it will be disputed for a couple of weeks first. Democracy in action.

I have one major disappointment in this year's election: what the hell happened to the 18-24 year old vote? After all the hoopla, all the voters' registration drives aimed at the young voters, all the MTV "Rock the Vote" hype, and yes, even after the Boss (that's Bruce Springsteen, for those of you who are totally clueless) showed up at several Kerry campaign stops, the percentage of 18-24 year olds who voted was exactly the same as in the 2000 election.

My God, you people need to wake up! After bitching about George W. Bush for years, apparently most of you stayed in your dorm rooms and fired up the bong instead of voting.

This is the truth: YOU COULD HAVE CHANGED THE OUTCOME OF THIS ELECTION! Oh, what the hell, I could go on and on about this, but 1) it's late, and 2) I might want to write a real article about this later. And besides, if you guys can't even take the time to vote, why should I stay up half the night bitching you out?

So, that said, here are the things that give me hope for our future: I spent an hour discussing every state question with a twenty-one year old voter who knew more about it than I did. That gives me hope. My son, who is 20, drove 80 miles from his college campus to vote in a state that always goes to the Republican candidate, in the rain! That gives me hope. And my 24 year-old daughter was out of town for the election, yet she took the time to apply for and cast an absentee ballot. That gives me hope.

If these people can put that kind of effort into exercising their right to vote, then surely the rest of you can get off of your asses long enough to go to your local polling places and make your voices heard.

Until you do, the rest of the nation won't take you seriously. And that's the Faulking Truth, dude.

I originally posted a really classy piece here called "Media Run Amuck" that compared the election to a mud-wrestling contest, but once again, I pilched it from the blog, added a couple of lines, changed the title to "Politicians Gone Wild" and turned it into a real article. Look for it at www.faulkingtruth.com/Articles/Commentary/1018.html
