- Love is....(An Ode to Valentine's Day)
by Mark Faulk Editor's note: This is from a book called "The Profit" by Kehlog Albran. It was published in 1973 in response to that bastion of philosophical bullshit that was written decades before, "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran, and which became popular in the late 60's and early 70's during the decade of free love and cheap drugs.
I know many young people who have heard stories about how glorious the 60's were, but then, they're hearing it through memories that were more likely than not clouded by any of a hundred different reality-altering drugs. Dude, most people who grew up in that decade are lucky to even remember the 60's, much less recall how screwed up things really were. If you want to shut up the next fifty-something burnout who waxes nostalgically about how enlightened the Woodstock Generation was, ask them about the Gibran book. Or better yet, remind them of another "important literary achievement" of the time, "Jonathon Livingston Seagull," a book about a seagull who wanted to soar with the eagles instead of diving for fish with his own kind.

This is a little something about Love, from "The Profit," which was my favorite philosophical book at the time:
A couple, their arms entwined, asked of love.
He answered:
Oftentimes the cornerstone of man's Love is not the laughter of stones.
Love does not afford the luxury of time to proclaim its allegiance with the stars and moons of Eden.
It is more than time.
Just as slaves approach withered justice, man without Love must face life as a wounded beast accepts the forest.
Love is larger than the forest.
Those who fear Love would fear life.
But those who possess Love need never fear life.
Love is the essence of life.
Love is a sacred purpose of man.
Love is never shoddy or disdained.
Love is all.
Love is wonder.
Love is mystical, quiet, and omnipotent.
More than a trillion words in a thousand tongues have been written about Love - but none less meaningful then the 143 on this page.
