Just a quick update of what's going on with the site. I'm feeling a bit subdued today, so everyone will escape the usual over-the-top political tirade. You can thank me later. Besides, I'm guessing if you're still undecided at this stage of the game, you're just doing it for the attention anyway. My advice: flip a two-headed coin (heads for Kerry, tails for Bush), and base your decision on that. Now, about that bridge I'm selling on Ebay.....
We're still churning out new pieces as if there's no tomorrow (and no, that's not a commentary on the Bush Administration's "low-level nuclear weapon" policy).
Down the Middle kicks it off this week with "Don't Want to Lose Ya in Fallujah", which looks at the politics of war, and how the upcoming election affects our military strategy. If you believe that it's not all about politics, then you're not paying attention.
Robin Buckallew takes us away from politics (thank you, Robin), with "Don't Blame the Grinch". If the mere mention of Christmas this early in the year makes you cringe, then you MUST read this article. And whatever you do, don't forget to make a pledge to simplify your holiday this season. It will do your soul, and the environment, a world of good.
Our guest commentator this week is Kevin Raney, a Midwest transplant who moved to New York four and a half years ago, and worked at the World Trade Center until shortly before 9/11. He offers a unique perspective into the security of the city both before and after the attacks with his article "From the Core of the Big Apple".
I've been busy again, so I'll list my contributions in random order:
In "Those Who Served", I explore the interesting divergence between the military records of those who speak loudest in blind support of the war in Iraq, and the military records of those who oppose the war.
In "FBI Response to Internet Scams: Don't Read Them", I go undercover in an attempt to infiltrate an international lottery scam. I make fun of the FBI, the Marines, internet con artists, and mortgage lenders. If that doesn't violate the Patriot Act, then I give up. In "Demise of the Writer" I turn Russell Tharp's personal struggles into a cautionary tale about the dangers of the internet, or maybe it's a touching love story. Or maybe it's about passion, or obsession, or it might even be a full-page ad for Prozac. I don't know, you read it and tell me what it's about.
Also, I finally update our Letters to the Editor section in "As the Guestbook Turns", and continue my random ramblings in Blogfest 2005. There are several new entries there, and a couple are even worth reading (who said that?).
In our words section, I picked "Shepherds of the Nation" a song from 1974 by Ray Davies of the Kinks. I'm pretty sure the Moral Majority used it as a model for their organization a few years later, and it could be a campaign song for Bush.
