Well, it's August, arguably the most boring time of the year. In honor of this month, I'll introduce each of our current articles using a few little-known holidays that occur in August. You might want to make a note of these in your datebook (or should I say your PalmOne Tungsten T3 Handheld), just so you'll have something to celebrate during the dog days of summer. Blame Someone Else Day, August 13: We honor this useful holiday with our article "He Said, She Said: SEC, NASD, at Odds Over Status of Proposal", although with the SEC and NASD, every day is "Blame Someone Else Day". Another Faulking Truth exclusive in our ongoing series about the stock market scandal. National Failures Day, August 15: Robin Buckallew takes a look at our insatiable appetite for gold and the environmental impact it has had in the San Juan Mountain region of Colorado in her article "When Is Too Much Enough?". A sobering look not only at our government's failures, but at ours as well. More Herbs, Less Salt Day, August 29: In "Wanted: An Alternative For Drug Offenders", To The Left discusses the "War on Drugs", and provides some alternatives to our national obsession with incarceration of drug offenders. Friendship Day, August 1: Our first article submitted by a Faulking Truth reader. D.E Neighbors celebrates National Friendship Day by penning a rebuttal to Ken Shade's "Some Of My Friends Are Confused", entitled "A Republican Speaks" I'm going to say something you won't hear me say about a Republican's viewpoint very often: this is a well-written and intelligent piece. Read it, I promise you won't catch anything. World Sauntering Day, August 28: World traveler Russell Tharp (I'm sorry, that should be "Dr. Tharp, Esquire") is back (God help us all) with a scheme about how to get rich on the internet, and tells us of his plans to spend the rest of his days wandering the beaches of Florida wearing only a Speedo, in "Paging Dr. Tharp. As with all his articles, take his advice with a grain of salt. National Twins Day, August 4: In "Please Don't Hang Me On A Cross Of Gold (Apologies to William Jennings Bryan)", Robin Buckallew tries to sort out which candidate is which, and the media's obsession with the idea that the Democrats should be more like the Republicans. Bush and Kerry: twins, anyone? Presidential Joke Day, August 11: And finally, we celebrate this "holiday" with lyrics from my favorite cynic, Randy Newman, in "Mr. President, Have Pity on the Working Man". In reality, it's no joke, but we couldn't find another holiday to fit, so live with it. By the way, this one replaces Russell Tharp's "For Lily", which would have been a fitting tribute to "Bad Poetry Day, August 18. That's all for now, hopefully we've given you a few ideas for things to do as you "while away the hours" of August. And don't forget to go to the store to stock up for Sunday's holiday: "Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Night". Who said August was boring?
